The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has proposed a new rule for the endangered red wolf. Among other things, it would reduce the recovery area for the only wild population of red wolves in the world from 1.7 million acres across five counties to 204,000 acres of public lands. You can learn more from their press release here.
The U.S. FISH AND WILDLIFE SERVICE RE-OPENS PUBLIC COMMENT PERIOD AUG. 13 - AUG. 28. The original public comment period ended July 30th and we published 12 videos to help to provide depth for your comments about the proposed rule. Since 2011 we, WildSides, have been filming about the red wolf and with people on all sides of the red wolf issue. So we feel it’s important to share what we can, as quickly as we can, in order to provide you with as much depth as possible. Each week during the public comment period, we will give you more content and more stories. Join us on this important adventure...

U.S. FISH AND WILDLIFE SERVICE RE-OPENS PUBLIC COMMENT PERIOD AUG. 13 - AUG. 28.
We want to create two new videos to provide more depth about two main issues in the conflict over the red wolf:
- Hunting - How do red wolves interact with hunting activities in the red wolf recovery area? What are the perceptions and realities?
- Coyotes - We will provide even more depth into the coyote issue and how that contributes to the conflict over red wolf recovery.
We have less than two weeks! Please consider a tax-deductible donation to allow us to create and produce these videos by clicking the Donate & Learn button. Many thanks to all those who have already contributed!
Episode 2: Enter the Red Wolf Recovery Area...What's It Like Down East?
Learn more about the Red Wolf REcovery Area with these motion graphics Providing County Rankings (there are 100 counties in North Carolina). These cover: County Area, Land Mass, Population Size, Poverty Rates and Median Income.
Episode 3: The first sign that success could be possible...The First to Survive.
How biologists use trapping to care for wild red wolves.
Episode 4: Why Red Wolves?
Learn about how red wolves fit into an ecosystem, why the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service chose northeastern North Carolina and what the Endangered Species Act is.
What does it mean when we refer to the only wild population of red wolves as a "non-essential experimental" population?
Episodes 5 & 6: Point/Counterpoint
Learn about the proposed rule & environmental assessment.
Episode 5: Reduction of the Recovery Area, Environmental Assessment.
Episode 6: The Alternatives and Wandering Wolves.
This is not our usual style of video. But we had some amazing interviews. So we want to share a couple opinions about the rule and the environmental assessment, especially since the public comment period ends soon.
Episode 7: Motivated by Challenge, Finding Similarities in Our Differences
Uncover similarities among people on different sides of the issues. In this episode we highlight how challenges motivate us by learning about the work of red wolf biologists and a hunter/trapper/commercial fisherman. We see how people on different sides of an intense conflict still respect each other.
Episode 8: What's the Deal with Red Wolves, Deer and Humans?
What about Coyotes, Hybrids and Placeholder Theory?
Check out a few statements about the coyote issue and an educational motion graphic about Placeholder Theory, part of the biologists' adaptive management plan to combat hybridization of wolves with coyotes. This is a scene from Staring Down Fate, our award-winning full-length documentary about a red wolf biologist.
